Creative Kitchen Islands: We Have a Winner!

It almost seems as though there was a running theme with the entries we received for our Creative Kitchen Islands Challenge. Most folks tossed aside the typical square corners, incorporating lots of curves and organic shapes into their designs. This made picking a winner somewhat difficult but in the end, there could be only one. And that one turns out to be msinger's "Curvy Kitchen Island."

In making the final selection, our crew of editors pointed out several design elements that set this unique kitchen island apart.

• Unique Curves
• A blend of different wood species and materials like glass.
• The hexagonal solid butcher block top
• Delicately dovetailed drawers

But Singer's wasn't the only island that drew attention. Below are three pieces that deserve honorable mention for their unique design elements and skillful execution.

• AxiosArchitect's "Sagamore Island" incorporates a graceful curve into its top and a unique glass design element that allows "foodies" to set cookbooks on the counter without worrying about spills or stains.

• Simmonsquality's "A Slate Above the Rest" incorporates a piece of beautiful slate "rescued by the homeowner from the Atlantic Ocean in Rhode Island."

• Lancepoo's simply named "Kitchen Island" offers a deceptively simple design. At first site, the island seems like a somewhat straightforward quarter-circle. Upon closer inspection however, one notices that the island's curves are carried straight through to the doors and drawers.
