Mortise and Tenon, custom turned and carved mahogany deck railing (no fasteners used)
comments (0) January 20th, 2009 in Project GalleryThis railing was built in the fall of 2005 to replace a rotted railing on an existing fir deck. The client was planning on doing an ipe or maranti deck in the near future but needed to replace the railing immediately because it was unsafe. She decided she wanted to use geniune pattern grade mahogany for the railing instead of one of the more common deck mahoganys' and wanted it to be one of a kind and to have a mediterranean feel. I designed a entirely mortise and tenon railing with custom turned balisters and newel posts with carvings on the posts. Eric Swanson of Wakefield, RI was hired to turn the posts and balisters from the templates I designed and New England wood products milled the top rail profile for me. All the carvings were done by myself in my shop located in Wakefield, RI. All joinery was cut by myself in the shop as well as much of it cut with hand tools onsite. Fininshing was done by myself, using Waterlox with help from my lovely fiance Nicole Kissick.
