For Homebuilding author Mike Norton, calling framing ‘rough carpentry’ is a misnomer. While framing isn’t as glamorous as finish carpentry, it’s the hub around which the whole job turns. An experienced framer can make everyone else’s job much easier. While the skills for framing are relatively simple – straight and square cuts, a good hammer technique, economy of motion, a strong back – there are a many tricks that make the job easier and the results more professional. We visited Mike and his crew on-site as they were framing a two-story addition.
In the following episodes, you’ll learn some of Mike’s time-saving methods of establishing square and parallel plates, tricks for stud layout, great techniques for faster production framing, and how to raise and straighten out walls.
