New Grex and Hitachi Cordless Brad Nailers
In this member-exclusive product review, Patrick McCombe shows how these lightweight cordless nailers improve on time-tested technology.
Grex and Hitachi both have new cordless 18-ga. nailers, each with different approaches for driving nails (but both methods we’ve seen before). The Grex is a gas-fired gun that uses AAA batteries instead of a proprietary battery pack to spark the internal combustion engine within. It loads very easily, has no lag, has a narrow housing, and is super light. The Hitachi is powered by a battery pack, and uses a spinning flywheel design that was first seen on DeWalt’s cordless finish nailers. It has a pretty good recovery rate, very little lag, and doesn’t seem to have any trouble nailing through hard cherry wood. The downside is that it’s heavier than even DeWalt’s very heavy nailer, but if you’re not worried about weight and you have a good belt to hang it from, it could be a good solution for you.
