Build It Green! 2008: The Kelley Home's Main Floor

For starters, the simple modular plan optimizes daylight and cross ventilation

Homeowner Craig Kelley, an affordable housing project manager, and his architect and builder discuss the strategies they used to achieve optimum daylighting and cross ventilation on the main floor of Craig's home, which was included in the Build It Green! Homes Tour + Info Fair in Portland, Ore. The main floor also features 2-in.-thick thermal flooring made of a mixture of straw, clay, and sand; stainless-steel and madrone countertops; a composting bin built into the kitchen island; and an under-counter recycling center.
