Outdoor living, in Florida, is as much a part of the local lifestyle as a clam bake is in New England. Our most recent, major commission began as the expansion of small porch, on a 10 year old, Mediterranean Revival home in Fort Lauderdale. It evolved into new outdoor living and activity space for every member of the family. “Additions and Renovations to houses should look as though they were designed by the original architect and should enhance the original building as a result of the new construction.” Un-named architect. We take this premise very seriously and execute our design and construction work accordingly. Patterns and material selections utilized in the existing residence were the starting point for the design of the addition. Finish selections, consistent with and upgraded from the original, migrate across the project, blurring the line between the new and existing portions of the house. “You’d think I designed the entire building” the original Architect said to me as we neared completion of the project … a pretty nice compliment from one of your peers. ]]>
<![CDATA[Small Pond ]]> Fri, 01 Aug 2014 03:26:44 -0500 Small Pond Posted by MChandler
It was one of those homes that always made me smile, a homestead done right behind a reflecting pond. A modest stone-wrapped cabin with an old tin roof set in a lawn studded with fruit trees. And then the phone rang and I was being asked about a whole house remodel. The potential to screw this up was huge, the budget was so small the building inspectors actually giggled when I told them. An 1850 era log cabin that had been moved to this site in 1900 and added on to subsided into the muck for 50 years and been "stabilized" at 8" out of level in twelve feet. It had been wrapped in asbestos (surprise!)then cedar and then added onto again and again. It had snakes in the crawl and bats in the attic. But it was the heart and soul of this community and an opportunity to do right(and get paid)and have fun doing it. ]]>
