A Faster, Easier Approach to Custom Cabinets

Create desks, bookcases, pantries, and more with a slick hybrid design and problem-solving pocket-screw joinery

Custom cabinets might seem like an enormous undertaking, but designer and former trim carpenter Mike Maines has a developed a way to streamline the process to make it faster and easier. Maines's plan starts with good design for face-frame cabinets. First, he assembles the face frames, and then he builds the boxes, which are held together with screws, glue, and quality hardware. Finally, Maines attaches the face frames to the boxes and dresses up the exposed end panels with paint-grade plywood or beadboard.
