Andy Engel handled the construction of a difficult set of winder stairs in Kevin Ireton's 200-year-old house, but it was Kevin's job to finish them. Kevin put off the job as long as he could. After running out of excuses and weary of the looks he was getting from his dog, Kevin eventually did get down to work painting the stairway's 58 balusters and installing the handrail components. The job wasn't without twists and turns and even this seasoned carpenter learned a few things along the way.

If you want to learn more about the construction of the stairs, read New Winders for an Old House from Fine Homebuilding issue #202 (April/May 2009), pp. 56-62.

And, if you want to learn more about Kevin's experience finishing the stairs, you can read the entries where he chronicled his progress in his blog Better Than Plumb.
