A hot pot caused a burned spot on our laminate counter near the stove. Rather than replace the entire countertop, I turned the location into a hot-pot landing.
At the local tile shop, I found a 12-in.-sq. tile that complemented the color of the counter. With a plunge router, I routed out the damaged area of the counter to a depth about 1/16 in. less than the thickness of the tile. Then I set the tile in a thin coat of thinset troweled onto the counter substrate. I sealed the edges around the tile with clear silicone caulk to keep out moisture. Now we’ve got a ceramic trivet right near the stove.
