Build Like a Pro: How to Solder Copper Cap Flashing

Learn how to shape and solder copper cap flashing, a window's first line of defense against water and the best way to prevent rot, insects, and mold

Length: 3:36
Produced By: Michael Dobsevage and Cari Delahanty

Cap flashing, which is installed atop the head casing, is a window's first line of defense against water infiltration. In this video, Fine Homebuilding contributor John Mahan shows you how to bend a simple "z" into the copper using a sheet-metal brake, how to cut and bend the flaps to make the cap, and how to solder the copper cap flashing and clean it up for a crisp cap flashing that will protect the house from water for years.

Click the links to read more about soldering copper cap flashing or to watch Mahan take this process one step further and make a decorative copper cap flashing.
