Sustainable Energy Conference Comes to Boston

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's annual conference, BuildingEnergy10, kicks off in Boston today with a series of full-and half-day workshops.

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association’s annual conference, BuildingEnergy 10, kicks off in Boston today with a series of full- and half-day workshops. Among other things, I’ll have to decide whether to go hear Joe Lstiburek reveal the fundamentals of building science, Larry Harmon explain how to retrofit a house for energy savings, or Katrin Klingenberg talk about passive houses that use 75% less energy than a typical house. Lucky for me, the press pass I’ll be wearing gets me into all of the sessions, so I can hop from one to the next.

If you live in New England and have nothing better to do this week (like so many builders these days), I strongly recommend this conference. It runs through Thursday, with the trade show (160 exhibitors) and a great series of shorter workshops starting tomorrow.

What I love most about this show is that NESEA members, for the most part, are absolutely uncowed by the tremendous energy problems facing this country. These folks know how to air seal an existing house and double the R-value of its walls and ceilings. They know how to build a new house that’s so tight and well insulated it doesn’t even need central heating. They know what Japanese company is making air-source heat pumps that are so efficient they’ll work in New England. They have the answers, and they’re happy to share them.

If you can’t make the conference, check back in a day or two. I’ll let you know what I learn.
