An important update on the EPA's Lead Certification Rule
comments (0) May 7th, 2010 in BlogsIn its earlier form, the EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rule required that lead-safe work practices be followed only in pre-1978 homes occupied by children under 6 or pregnant women. The earlier version of the rule allowed homeowners to sign a form saying that no pregnant women or children under 6 lived in the house, opting themselves - and their contractor(s) - out of the rule.
As of April 23rd, the opt-out clause has been removed. In other words, it doesn’t matter who lives in the pre-1978 house you’ll be working on, you’ll have to be certified and follow the lead-safe work practices.
You can read more about how and why the opt-out clause was removed from the rule here: http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2010/pdf/2010-10100.pdf
