Interesting Pattern on a Winding Stair
Someone went to considerable effort to paint the diamond pattern onto this staircase at an 18th century home in southern Maine. In addition to this stairway, the house also had several rooms that had been painted by itinerant stencil artist Moses Eaton, who lived and worked in New England in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. His work was very intricate, yet had a primitive quality that enriched any room graced by his skills. Many of these paintings still exist in homes throughout New England. While it is possible that he painted this stairway, it was probably done by someone else as Eaton was primarily known for his stencil work.
