Mark Newman is a furniture maker and designer in Portland, Oregon who also plies his talents in residential finish work. On this project, he and his shop built bookcases that flanked the fireplace. Concealed by really tight joinery and overlapping moldings that mimics shadowlines, the case on the left can be pulled open and reveals a coat closet behind.
