LunchPail Podcast: Shear Bracing for Foam-Sheathed Walls

Energy efficient construction methods are becoming much more common on job sites around North America. Articles about these techniques are showing up more and more in Fine Homebuilding magazine. While a lot of the techniques are not new, they may be new to you.

One such practice that is gaining ground in new construction as well as retrofits is applying exterior foam to wrap a house in insulation. This practice presents some special conundrums for builders who are new to the practice, like "how do I flash the window opening?"

By far the most common question we get at Fine Homebuilding whenever we publish an article about breaking the thermal bridge with exterior foam, relates to lateral bracing, or shear strength of the finished walls.

And because many of the construction details at Green Building Advisor (our premium website) feature this construction method, we asked the experts to weigh in on it for us.

Fine Homebuilding's editorial advisor, Mike Guertin, and Green Building Advisor's technical editor, Peter Yost, sat down and talk through some of the construction details available in Green Building Advisor's detail library. They discuss seven ways to address shear resistance.

7 options for shear bracing on a foam sheathed wall:

1. 1/2 in sheathing all over then foam on top.
2. Let-in 1x4
3. Diagonal metal braces
4. L-Shape let-in metal brace
5. Plywood on the corners
6. Simpson, or other pre-made panel
7. Site-built inset panel
