Storage Shed
comments (0) August 12th, 2011 in Project GalleryThis is our Storage Shed. I designed it in 2003 after we purchased this property. Built it the following year after a lengthy permit & variance odyssey. Approximate size is 440sq.ft floor area. One side wall measures 26 ft, the rear is 24ft. Construction is mainly 2x6, with 5/8 ply sheathing and 3/4 ply roof with ridge venting. It is an "L" shape, with a 94.5 deg. opening, due to our lot's planform. Built to use existing retaining walls (rear is 8ft high, side is around 3ft). The longer leg features a vaulted ceiling to allow us to hang our homebuilt wooden kayak for winter storage. Concrete slab floor with built in hydronic heating coils, 2" under floor insulation and ICF footings. Ulterior motive is a small workshop and/or living area, as we are also zoned for B&B. Water, gas and electricity & cable are roughed in but not yet connected, hence the extension cord visible in some pictures. Windows are European style by Euroline. New and final doors are presently in works, "when I get around to them". Exterior finish is cedar tongue and groove, natural stained. Features a custom made (by myself) gas fire pit using a titanium jet engine exhaust nozzle (we are not allowed open fires in our jurisdiction).
The shed's patio & sitting area is granite flagstone, each stone around 8-12" thick. Laid in a free form pattern, we were able to find some "inside corner" pieces to wrap around the exterior corners. We used a thinner stone to cover the exterior plumbing cleanout, with it's location clearly marked on an inside "map" of the layout for future reference. The plantings (mosses and grasses, with some hardy wildflowers) are now taking hold.
Due to required "sightlines" from neighbouring properties, the only thing visible from the adjacent street is the roof and a few feet of the side wall. Note the solid rock retaining wall visible through the opening between the shed and the hedge by stone stairs.
As it is a work in progress, we will still be installing a sun shade trellis or sun-sail over the patio, as well as copper gutters with draining into the catch barrel etc.
Hope that some will like it and use it for inspiration / ideas.
