Walnut burl backsplash
bookcase
curly maple drawers

This client lived in a log home and had and older "vintage" kitchen with a less thatn freindly design. A sink located in the old island that placed your back to the only window in the kitchen was just one of the issues that needed to be addressed in this update. The client also wanted an "old feel" to the new kitchen without giving up the conveinince of modern cabinetry. The wood we seleceted for the doors was Butternut because of its range of color and that aged look that the client was looking for. For the panel inserts in the doors I re-sawed and bookmatched solid butternut and then routed V-grooves into it to give the appearance of tonge and groove. In going through my lumber I even found some peices with old powder post beetle holes in it and incorporated that into a few peices. The addition of crossbuck braces on select doors added to the "old barn door" feel of the cabinets. The client had numerous cookbooks and wanted a place to store them. I suggested adding a bookcase and legs to the to the ends of the island and finishing it in the black opaque stain to give a nice contrast and a furniture feel to it. The drawers were done in curly maple because with all of the color and contrast going on around the kithen I thought the drawers had to be as nice. The client was struggling with what to do with the backsplash and I thought a wanut color would look nice against the stone tops and butternut, so I brought a sample peice of walnut burl for them to look at and they loved it. So the backsplash is a 6 peice bookmatch of walnut burl.

In my opinion this kitchen defines the word custom, one of a kind.
