We replaced a rabbit warren of rooms with a spacious, communally oriented kitchen inspired by the unfitted kitchen concept advocated by Johnny Grey. The cabinetry along the back wall evokes a tansu chest, executed in rich Spanish cedar with a weathered copper backsplash and accent in front of the sink, and a shoji screen enclosing the cookie sheet and cutting board storage above the refrigerator. The brightly dyed panel on the front of the island offers a splash of color when looking from the dining room. From the back door, the highly contrasting woods and horizontal lines of the island and computer corner blend later arts and crafts and art deco elements. The bowfront pantry cabinet contrasts with both of those compositions, and yet relates to the curved elements of the island. Whimsical carved cowgirl boots and a rattlesnake complete the pantry. Paperstone countertops throughout tie the entire kitchen together.
