Whether your block plane has a few miles on it or it's brand new out of the box, you need to know how to put a sharp edge on the blade to take your finish carpentry to the next level.

In this Building Skills video, we'll show:

  • The assortment of sharpening stones needed to sharpen a block plane
  • How to disassemble a plane
  • How to use diamond stones to flatten the back of the blade
  • How to use a sharpening jig to get a precise bevel angle on the blade
  • How to draw the jig and blade across progressively-finer-grit stones to put a mirror finish on the edge
  • How to remove the burr--the loose strip of metal that appears on the back of the blade's edge as a result of honing
  • How to reassemble and test your plane
