As part of a major interior renovation on the coast of Maine, our design/build company was charged with designing and building new faces for an existing two-sided fireplace. The residence has tall ceilings but the floor area is somewhat modest, which is reflected in the proportions we used for the fireplace. The existing interior had a variety of not very sophisticated details; we unified the interior with similar details throughout for the kitchen, vanities, and other built-ins including the mantel, yet each space has its own unique elements. The surround was designed for easy installation, was built from poplar and mdf, and was finished in place using water borne Satin Impervo.
