The crimped end should be the "male" end, should it not?
I don't think the video really shows you how to avoid barbs- I've been learning to do ducting at a Habitat site, using a technique I can't distinguish from Justin's, but I still create barbs occasionally.
Not closing the snips completely to the tip will prevent those sharp "fishhooks" along the edge.
