Curious about my window seat?
comments (0) January 14th, 2009 in BlogsSomeone (Andrew in Chelsea) posted a comment to my last post asking about a window seat that he had seen in the magazine and wondering if it was mine. It was. We featured it in the Finishing Touches department of our 25th anniversary issue (FHB #177, February/March 2006). I've posted the photos above. Here's the text that accompanied them in the magazine.
My colleague Chuck Miller said that if you're going to build a window seat, make it big enough to sleep in. So I sized this cantilevered bay to accept a twin-size futon mattress. The timbers in this addition are recyled southern yellow pine from Pioneer Millworks, and I resawed some leftover pieces to make the drawer fronts and the face frames under the mattress. The windows were recylced from a house that was being torn down. I added the pullout side table after a frustrating year of watching my wife, who occupies this space like a nest, continually drag over a dining chair to set her coffee on.
P. S. Andrew, if you (or anybody else) needs to email me directly, write to fh@taunton.com and put attn:Kevin Ireton in the subject line.

About this blog
As the editor of Fine Homebuilding, I spend my weekdays trying to produce a magazine that will satisfy 300,000 of the most demanding builders, both professional and amateur. As the owner of a 200-year old Cape in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, I spend weekends working on my house.
Each activity invariably informs, and complicates, the other. In this blog, I’ll offer observations from both worlds -- publishing and building -- with the hope of providing some useful or at least entertaining insights.
