Live (or maybe half dead) from the International Builders' Show
comments (1) January 16th, 2009 in BlogsMonday morning I get on a plane for Las Vegas and the 2009 International Builder’s Show, which runs from Tuesday through Friday. Last year I missed the show because of knee surgery, and I briefly considered scheduling some additional orthopedic work to avoid the fray again this year. That little tear in my right rotator cuff still bothers me during sun salutations in yoga class. But I didn’t think my boss would let me skip the show two years in a row.
It’s not that I don’t like going to the show. I do. Sort of. I get to look at all the cool new building products. I get to talk to readers of the magazine (who generally say very nice things about it). I get to attend seminars. In fact, I just noticed that the educational seminars are being sponsored this year by Countrywide Home Loans. Am I the only one who thinks that’s a little ironic? Anyway, I like the show, but it’s exhausting. You’re pretty much on the run from 7:00 in the morning until 10:00 at night. And being in Las Vegas just contributes to the cacophony. The whole thing is an energy vampire.
This year I’m also going to try blogging about the show each day. As what you might call a sporadic blogger, I’m a little intimidated by the tyranny of daily posts. We’ll see how it goes. But if you have questions about the show, or about things you want me to check out while I’m there, please post a comment here or on next week’s posts. I’ll try to be accommodating.
Now if only I can remember to bring my camera and my laptop. Viva Las Vegas.

About this blog
As the editor of Fine Homebuilding, I spend my weekdays trying to produce a magazine that will satisfy 300,000 of the most demanding builders, both professional and amateur. As the owner of a 200-year old Cape in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, I spend weekends working on my house.
Each activity invariably informs, and complicates, the other. In this blog, I’ll offer observations from both worlds -- publishing and building -- with the hope of providing some useful or at least entertaining insights.
