This kitchen in a suburb of Philadelphia, PA was refurbished on weekends over a period of about four month’s. My 79 year old mother in-law who has been a widow since 1987 and just having hip-replacement surgery came home from the hospital to find her kitchen completed. My wife Susan and her sister Linda worked many hours sanding priming and painting the sixteen cabinet doors and cabinet frames, inside and out (three coasts of primer sanded between each coat and two top coats).
All of the appliances were replaced; I relocated the main base cabinet of drawers to make way for a dishwasher. The oven, cook top, range hood, and sink were replaced. Plus a garbage disposal was added. The disposal and dish washer were new long-awaited additions.
This kitchen originally built in the early sixties was renovated for a total of $5,100. $3,800 of which was spent on the appliances and countertop. The electric for the garbage disposal and dishwasher made up another $425 and the balance of $875 was used for drawer slides, hinges, knobs, handles, trim, ornamental scrolls, tile, paint, miscellaneous supplies and the installation of two extra electrical receptacles.
My mother in-law is ecstatic with how it turned out. This goes to show with help from family, a lot of elbow grease, and a little money can really go a long way, especially in these tough times.
Thank you for considering our kitchen remodel in your “Before and After: What’s Old is New Again” contest.
