50 Year Old Kitchen Update

A unique feature of this Kitchen is the T&G cathedral ceiling. We used cabinet top accent lighting, low voltage mini spots, a white subway tile backsplash, and wall color to brighten the space.
Old site-built cabinets. Door to the Garage in the wrong place.  It prevented efficent use of the wall space and all traffic from Garage had to pass through the Kitchen work area.
There was a wall between the Kitchen and Living/Dining area which also limited the amount of natural light in the Kitchen. You can now look out at a full bank of windows in the Living room. A large double pantry is on the left of the picture. The side-by-side refrigerator/ freezer is behind the pantry units.
The new door to the Garage is now located in this corner of the Kitchen. This provides direct access to a large double pantry and a sizable countertop that is part of the new pass-through. Traffic flows directly to the rest of the house and bi-passes the Kitchen work area.
The T&G cathedral ceiling was a unique architectural feature, but because of the paint lines it required a lot of work to restore (including sand blasting). The old pantry units and cabinets went all the way to the ceiling and brocked out the skylight over the front entry.

This is a kitchen remodel we did for a neighbor and it is one of our favorites.  The original Kitchen was over 50 years old. The project included relocating the door to the Garage, opening a pass-through to the Dining / Living Room, lowering a closet wall between the Kitchen and Front Entry Hall, and adding 1 x 4 bracing to the bottom of the floor joists to stiffen the floor. Insulation in the walls and a hot water kick space heater solved a problem with a Kitchen that had been cold in the winter. Two large pantry cabinets are located across from the new garage entry door and adjacent to the side by side refrigerator/freezer.
