Hotel Bath to Home Bath

When my wife and I bought this house three years ago,  we knew the first thing I’d do was to remodel the bathroom.  Our first impression of the existing bath was a confused combination of wow and what . The layout included a 5x5 black corner Jacuzzi and a black granite vanity top.  Marble tiled shower and  plush carpet… what more could you ask for?  Well to start,  black didn’t seem like the best choice for a bath,  the light fixtures were more suited to a Las Vegas Casino and the custom ten foot vanity with two sinks had only one drawer. The shower was tiny and impossible to clean.

I thought we could reuse some of the current plumbing and electrical.  I would jettison the Jacuzzi in favor of a standard soaking tub,  make a vanity and a custom shower.  No big deal.  A year and a half later I was still putting on the finishing touches having found leaking drain pipes,  no electrical boxes, generally funky wiring and rotting wall studs where the marble shower was laid against standard sheet rock with no moisture  barrier.

The result was worth the effort.  I ripped it back to the bare joists and leveled the floor.   At the same time as I replaced all the plumbing and electrical,  I installed hydronic  heat in the floor.  Schluter system in the shower and continuous across the whole room,  no shower curb.   Custom mitered and tempered glass without structural hardware or wipers.  The floor and shower are done in a travertine tile with glass accents. Corian Tops on a Figured Makore vanity.  And did I mention 15 drawers and a linen cabinet.
