Bamboo island with Fireslate counters. Note the stainless counter brackets and recessed bamboo receptacle plate.

This island is part of a new custom bamboo kitchen designed by Fivecat Studio | Residential Architecture. The kitchen is used by the professional chef homeowner for her private cooking school, a place to entertain friends and a place to prepare meals for her family each evening. In addition to being a great place to hang out, the island is used for cooking demonstrations with help from overhead closed circuit cameras mounted on the "cloud" above and viewed on the flat screen TV in the adjacent family room.
The island was fabricated by Winchester Woodworks in Winsted, CT (as were the all the other cabinets) using sustainable bamboo plywood. The durable counters are gray Fireslate (the same material used for fireproof laboratory tables). The stainless steel counter brackets are custom fabricated and are designed to conceal the structural elements required to cantilever the heavy upper counter.
