Became a professional furniture builder at the age of 60 after retiring from an IT career. I'm finishing a new shop and a timber frame home in a mountain valley at 8500' 12 miles east of Taos, NM. Building the home has been an eye-opening experience for me and wife Emily, but I definitely want to build more. The house design is passive solar and we're very cozy with only a wood stove in -0d weather.

This is a house that really did not impress my wife Emily or I in the magazine. But, when we saw the video we loved it and could see how it won its award. Interesting.

Re: The value of delight

First, I really appreciate it when editors talk about their ideas for improving their publications and provide readers with an opportunity for feedback. Second, I was relieved when there was no mention of cutting back the magazine or the website. I think Fine Homebuilding is one of America's finest publications. Third, I loved the article by Art Ludwig in the Bath/Kitchen issue. I've been mulling it over for the last few days, and I think it points the way toward improving the Fine Homebuilding's coverage. I'd like to see more articles about best and visionary practices in home building and how they align with our responsiblity to the environment. Follow-up articles from Art Ludwig or an update on the Bensonwood/MIT collaboration are two ideas. Thanks, Bob B., Taos, NM
