David- You are correct that a 3dB increase in sound is 2x the power. But, the human ear is also a non-linear receiver. Which is why we can hear a stage whisper and a jack hammer, even though they are 100,000,000 times apart in power.
In fact, a 10dB increase in sound power only *seems* like it is twice as loud. So there really is very little difference in apparent noise output between these drivers. However, anything above 80 dB requires ear protection, and that safety limit is calculated for ALL the site noise combined, not just the one driver.
