The throat of the Vise Grip is less than the distance from the front of the saw back to the blade, so I don't think this is dangerous. You would have to cut real fast, not notice that the Vise Grip fell off and then cut over the top of the Vise Grip.

A Fantech SH704 HRV is $476. It wouldn't seem that would break the budget.
