Re: Are Replacement Windows a Waste of Money?
In my experience, old single pane windows not only leak a lot of air, they also leak a lot of noise from outside the house. Cleaning & maintaining old wooden single pane windows with storm windows is a nighmare of a job. The reason all those windows were not maintained was because it was such a hard, mundane, time consumning job. There is also the issue of Lead based paint inside and out, and of course part of that maintenance job is scaping and painting those windows. Add to that the pain of raising and lowering windows painted several times.

Newer tilt in windows are so much easier to clean, that I might actually clean them from time to time! In my mind, the benefits above are worth the replacement, even if the thermal benefits don't pay for themselves anytime soon.
