Re: How to Prevent Cracks in Drywall

After reading the article here, l thought l would reply.
I live in Ontario, Canada l have been a drywall taper since 1978 just over 33 years.
I never use mesh tape unless needed in repairing a small hole. Many tapers use mesh tape to save time, material but l prefer paper tape if needed the paper tape with bendable metal in it l use for ceiling corners l can't prefill or on corners where needed.

I prefill every gap with sheetrock 45, sands nice goes on smooth, durabond 90 l never use hard to sand for me durabond 90 was the demand in the 1980's and 1990's but up here not much now.
Here tapers again to save money time apply tape with sheetrock 45, durabond 90 l prefer using low dust purple box from start to finish, l know the younger generation of tapers will disagree with me. But l can make as much money using regular mud paper tape on all 3 coats and in the end do an excellent job.

For the part for the hairline crack on seams, when tape/mud was applied there may have been not enough screws put in board or some screws were sunk to deep on board.
Up here in Ontario hardly anyone prefill joints takes up time but will give a better finish as it will firm up joints if abit bouncy.

Sometimes if a homeowner or a beginner taper will not put on enough mud or wipe to much off causing air bubbles.
When tape is dry just cut with utility knive back on each side of bubble then replace that portion of tape.
For 1/2'' board l built 2 additions a 1,000 sq ft on my home in 1987/1988 used 1/2'' gyprock still today no cracks nothing l used 1/2'' on ceiling as well trusses 24''o/c no problems.

The above just my opinion if anyone needs a question answered on there work email me at jimsdrywallrenovations@hotmail.com will be glad to help you if l can.
Thanks Jim

Re: Insulating an Old House from the Outside

This topic l as well need help with from a professional?,
I am renovating my father inlaws house built about 1955.
I have a musty smell been there about 15 years, but trying to explain to my inlaws never worked living there he never smelled it.
It has cathederal ceilings, when l gut it insulating walls l can do but how do l insulate a cathederal ceiling all rooms have beams showing not sure how to reinsulate ceilings?

crawling space a company who puts down 20 mil liner over dirt floor and up walls taping seems then spays stuff on block walls says will keep humidity below 60 a bit over 1,000 sq ft crawling space price for work $ 2,600.00 plus taxes, and l need to buy 16 bags of Roxul R22 24 inches wide strips this goes on wall.
If any pro's can advise me on this please email me at jimswoodworking@yahoo.com soon as possible if you can.

Thanks
jim

Re: A Moldy Crawlspace Nightmare

I am hoping to solve a problem at my father inlaw's house.
When we go there the house smells musty, have seen some spots of what looks like black mold.
The musty smell when he comes to visit is on him and his clothing, he has lived in smell l guess so long he doesn't smell it.

Years ago he changed pipes taking laundry drain water that went to septic tank, he rum laundry water soap to sump pump drain. He over the years killed his chickens and blood in water went to sump pump drain likely some sat in bottom of pit.

When you flush toilet barely flushes, hear girgle in kitchen sink water brown tint colour.
Think laundry water should be pumped to septic, so all the dirty laundry water or other stuff don't sit in bottom of sump pump pit.
Would their be any benifit to having house inspected, does anyone have idea's how to fix above smell or hire a company who can inspect or test why and where moldy musty smell is coming from?

Hoping when my wife inherits her Dad's house in the next 1-2 years that we don't have to gut complete house.
Maybe removing carpets, digging out gravel in crawling space putting down plastic vapour barrier and then new gravel may help and stop burning wet wood in woodstove, which maaybe puts moisture in air?
Please email me at jimswoodworking@yahoo.com or at jimsdrywallrenovations@hotmail.com either business email address is ok

thanks
jim

Re: Where do you build cabinets?

Hi, l am just learning woodworking really want to learn to make good quality cabinets would take course if offered in Trenton, Ontario.
This is just my opinion not as a cabinet maker but as a woodworker l make to date mainly shelves, book cases, coffee table/end table sets, patio items.

But l would think cabinets if custom built be better built in a shop unless the cabinet maker had on site garage to use and had all machines he/she needed.
If your installing cabinets you assemble from a box store then l guess on site be ok but l like to think most strive for quality first priority is how l am anyway.

For your next issue, l would like to see detailed step by step kitchen cabinets being made with good text details beside each step by step process.
I am sure their are many readers like myself beginners who would like to see even a set of kitchen cabinets say 10 ft of uppers and 10 ft base kitchen cabinets layed out step by step.

As an example l myself need to urgently make a 36 inch base sink cabinet for my daughter living in front of my house presently no cabinets or kitchen sink above info be great.

Thanks
Jim
