Re: Are Replacement Windows a Waste of Money?
I've been looking at replacement windows for some time now. I bought a 1920s rowhouse in Baltimore that has been maintained to a degree, but the windows have been neglected. They're standard double hung, with triple track storms. I initially thought I would try to restore them, but after doing some research into the cost, I'll probably replace them with fiberglass or clad wood new construction windows. The originals weren't flashed properly, so an extended rain lets some moisture in and the plaster has deteriorated as a result. Between the noise, leakiness and the ugly triple tracks, the originals just aren't worth saving. I'm also considering replacing the old wood sill with a cast stone replacement. It'd eliminate the old wood sill and fit a little better with the rest of the masonry facade.
