When we bought our “fixer upper” house we knew the kitchen was a disaster, we just didn’t realize how disastrous. With the exception of one wall all the old lath and plaster was shot had to be pulled down. The subfloor, we found out, had been replaced with cobbled-in-place plywood sheets, so the floor had to be ripped up to the joists. Other than the electrical, my wife and I did all the work ourselves during nights and weekends in what turned out to be a 14 month project. We even built the cabinets ourselves. A few of the original cabinets had been moved to the basement so we used them as models for the new cabinets as part of our effort to restore the historic beauty of our old house.
