The structure of this stair is simplicity itself. A massive Aspen log spans diagonally from basement slab to the floor framing above. The log was notched to accept thick Walnut treads, which cantelever off it’s central axis. Halved, a hollow core was revealed….a fire scar caused by a ground fire that raced through the woods 80 years ago. Railings are Red Cedar. All the wood was locally harvested using sustainable forestry practices, low-tech equipment and solar kilns.
