New Southern Coastal Style Residence
This new house was built for a couple moving from New York City. Wanting to have the walk-ability of New York and the space of the suburbs, they decided to settle and build in downtown Decatur, Georgia. The clients wanted to evoke the feel of coastal home to reflect their fond memories of their childhood summer vacations. To accomplish this, exposed rafter details, metal roofing, and a large front porch were incorporated on the exterior of the house. One of the design challenges was to incorporate a photography studio into the house that would be accessible to clients without entering the main house. The studio is situated in the space over the garage and is accessible from both the outside of the house and well as from the inside.
On the interior, the color palette was kept very light and airy and the architectural details very simple. The main living space is comprised of a family room, breakfast room and kitchen anchored by a very large 11′ long island. This show stopping island, constructed to look like a thick monolithic slab of white Corian, is both practical and beautiful. The lime washed oak cabinets are reminiscent of sun bleached wood. The other centerpiece of the home is the master bathroom that incorporates South American Ipei wood on both the tub skirt and mirrors. Oversized neutral porcelain floor and wall tiles accentuate the beauty of the wood and create a very tranquil space.
The homeowners antique car required a temperature controlled space. We accomplished this by providing a separate heat-pump to maintain a level temperature in the garage. In addition, a 250-bottle wine cellar is aptly located next to the dining room.
