A simple, iconic house in a garden on a typical city lot, Project Green Home is far from ordinary. Combining passive strategies with an exceptionally well-insulated envelope and a sophisticated mechanical system, this family home pushes the technological boundaries of energy and water efficient design.
Our clients had ambitious goals: a ‘Beyond-LEED-Platinum’, Net-Zero Energy, and Passive House certified demonstration home on a budget that would also be a comfortable family home that they would love.
The result is a compact 2500 sf family home, 4 bedrooms plus a ground floor “senior suite.” The house is traditional, but also uncompromisingly modern from its open floor plan to its well-sealed envelope and advanced, high-efficiency heating system. While the individual rooms are relatively small, they open up to each other in plan or in section to create flexible, generous spaces with balanced daylight, and spacial interest. The simple, 2-storey gabled form varies across its length, most prominently in a play space that opens to the living space below for increased daylight, as well as great passive ventilation – mechanically-operated skylights open allowing heat to escape from much of the house. The tall gable provides attic space above the guest room, and 2 interconnected play lofts above the kid’s bedrooms.
