Editor's Review: DeWalt revamps saw stand

review date: November 10, 2011

DeWalt’s DW723 miter-saw stand, a favorite for many contractors, has just been retooled to address some weak points. Rest assured that the new stand, the DWX723 ($200), retains the core design of the original. The changes are all subtle, yet appreciated.

The extension lock knobs and leg locks both have been replaced with plastic levers, which are much easier to operate. The saw-mounting brackets, which are still universally compatible with any brand of saw, now have a more secure two-stage quick release. Finally, the plastic caps on the feet of the original stand, most of which have fallen off and been lost on my model, have been replaced with screw-on caps.

Some new accessories are also available, including roller supports for the outfeed arms and a support to help steady the outfeed arms when fully extended. I didn’t have much luck with the new shoulder strap, though, which I found more awkward than convenient. I also would have preferred a better design in the outfeed supports, which still loosen up at their connection to the outfeed arm and are cumbersome to adjust up and down to match the table height. DeWalt is also extending the lineup to include a smaller version of the saw stand (DWX724, $180) and fold-up work stands that accommodate the saw-mounting brackets (DWX725, available with and without brackets, starting at $90).
