Editor's Review: Quick, Versatile Support

review date: July 1, 2004

I find new uses for my 3rd Hand every week. It's made of articulating plastic pads on the ends of a telescoping steel tube that adjusts with a lever-style hand piston. The telescoping tube has positive stops every 8 in. to 12 in. (from 59 in. to 103 in.), and the piston shaft extends the tool's range another 38 in. The 3rd Hand has a 70-lb. load capacity.

I own a couple of 3rd Hands, and I use them to hold up dust partitions, hold drywall to the ceiling, flatten bowed wide-plank flooring until fastened, lift and hold upper cabinets in place, secure loads in the bed of my truck, bring cabinet joints together when gluing, mount a laser for leveling lines around a room, and hold crown molding in place until it's nailed.

Also available are laser-mounting brackets as well as a fixed base that's handy for when the pole needs to be kept straight up.
