Editor's Review: The Eight Best Power Planers

review date: September 1, 2003

Its light weight makes this planer a maneuverable tool, which we appreciated when taking multiple passes and straightening crooked stock. Both front and rear shoes were exceptionally flat, and the smoothness of the cut was definitely above average. The grip is comfortable, especially with its rearward tilt. This is a very good, no-frills planer at a bargain price. It is best used for light-duty work.

This planer is only available as part of a kit (model no. PS20SBK), which includes several accessories and a carrying case.

pros:Least-expensive tool among the eight finalists.

cons:Complicated blade-changing procedure, short fence, no dust-collection ports, lacks safety features such as blade guard and park rest.
