Editor's Review: A Chainsaw Miter Guide

review date: July 1, 2002

The Headcutter turns a chainsaw into a miter saw, quickly attaching to chain bars from 14 in. to 44 in. long and enabling precise cuts. The miter gauge, which is bolted to a 3/16-in. thick aluminum base plate, is a new take on an old idea. It comes in two versions: one that miters up to 45 degrees (the model tested) and another that miters up to 75 degrees. The Headcutter would be my tool of choice for gang-cutting rafters, beams, I-joists and SIPs.

I let a timber-framer borrow my Headcutter, and he found it useful for mitering and cutting beams to length. He also used the Headcutter as a depth gauge for cutting notches and dadoes by attaching the tool near the end of the bar. A remodeling contractor also used the depth-gauge feature to cut through wall studs without damaging the exterior siding.
