Editor's Review: Belt Sanders Get Better

review date: November 1, 2007

At 7.1 lb., the Bosch 1274DVS is relatively light in weight. It features excellent belt tracking, and the belt on the model tested spun perfectly right out of the box. Speed can be regulated by trigger pressure, although this could be more precise. A trigger-mounted dial can be set to limit the tool's top speed. Its 13-ft. cord ensures mobility.

A sanding frame, bench-mounted stand, fence, and vacuum adapter are available separately. Attaching the stand and fence to the sander turns it into a stationary tool. The vacuum adapter is designed for use with a Bosch vacuum and may not be compatible with vacuums from other manufacturers.

Although the owner's manual mentions sanding metal as an application, doing this can result in a build up of thermite, which is extremely volatile. If you sand metals, either use a crepe-rubber belt-cleaning stick, or change to a fresh belt.
