Editor's Review: New Bosch Jigsaw Adds Blade Supports

review date: March 1, 2005

Bosch's new jigsaw, the 1590EVS, is an updated version of the company's classic model 1587. This saw has all the features you would expect: smooth-start motor, quick-release blade change, tool-free adjustment of the base, three orbital settings, and a dust blower.

What's new, however, are the blade guides. Resembling a pair of hardened-steel insect jaws, Bosch's precision-control guides work in conjunction with the guide roller to support both sides of the blade very low to the worksurface. I noticed how easily the saw handled cutting curves in thicker material. There was less lateral blade wandering than on my old Bosch, giving me nearly square cuts. The blade guides engage with the push of a button and release when the blade is ejected.

The Bosch 1590EVS features a comfortable D-handle grip, and it has no Allen wrenches to lose. At 6 amps, the saw is more powerful than the version it replaced. A barrel-grip version, the 1591 EVS, also is available from Bosch. The 1590EVS is only sold as part of a kit, which includes three blades and a carrying case (model no. 1590EVSK).

Editor's Review: A Better Breed of Jigsaws

review date: September 1, 2006

The Bosch 1590EVSK handles like a dream, despite being somewhat big. Of the 12 saws we tested, it had the best blade change, ejecting spent blades and allowing easy insertion of fresh ones. It offers front flush-cutting ability, a long cord, and a blade guide that's more effective than the standard wheel-type guides on most other saws. A tension dial above the base allows fine-tuning of the bevel adjustment, which is completely toolless. The base can be shifted forward, but only at the 90 degree setting. This puts the blade within about 3/8 in. of the front of the saw, making it possible to cut nearly perpendicular to a surface. Vibration is minimal.
