Editor's Review: Blue-Ribbon Small-Parts Storage

review date: March 10, 2011

When I needed a storage solution for the generous assortment of fasteners I take from job to job, I wanted to make a dovetailed wooden box with compartments. But even miserly woodaholic building addicts like me have moments of good judgment. When I saw the Husky Cantilever Organizer at the store—a $30, low-profile plastic rig with a cantilevered lid and removable bins—I pulled the trigger.

From its sturdy handle to its beefy metal latches, its selfsupporting lid to its wide, flat stance, I love this box. Although the box is only about 61/2 in. high, its 12in. by 22in. footprint contains 27 bins, and each bin can fit an impressive amount of fasteners. Unlike a fishingtackle box with fixed compartments, these bins are removable, making it easy to grab the parts I need without bringing the whole box to the task.

Soon after buying the box shown here, I bought its big brother—also $30, but closer to 10 in. tall, and with an open lower compartment—to store my plumbing tools and various fittings. I plan to buy a third one to hold my electrical gadgets. Sure, it would be nice to build a box, or even a set of boxes, but sometimes it just makes sense to buy, especially when it frees you for more building.
