Editor's Review: Painless Plug Removal

review date: March 8, 2012

Hole saws are indispensable tools, and also among the most annoying to deal with. It often takes longer to remove the plug from a hole saw than it takes to drill the hole that put it there in the first place. I don’t think such a hassle is necessary, and Lenox agrees. That’s why it introduced Speed Slot, a redesigned line of bimetal hole saws.

A couple of things on Speed Slot hole saws help to make plug ejection easier. First, there is no paint on the inside. That’s important, because the heat generated from cutting a hole softens the paint, which often mixes with the sawdust and makes a gummy mess. Second, stair-stepped slots extend nearly all the way to the bottom of the extra-deep sidewalls. It’s easy to get a screwdriver under the plug, and you always have a leverage point as you work the plug out.

Speed Slot hole saws are available in 52 sizes, from 9⁄16 in. dia. to 6 in. dia., and in a variety of kits for general use and for plumbers and electricians specifically. Prices for individual hole saws range from about $7 to $110, depending on size.
