Editor's Review: Ventilation for Tight Working Spaces

review date: January 1, 2003

Recently, I bought a Power Cat portable blower. After 25 years of musty crawlspaces and ovenlike attics, I'd had enough. The final straw came when I landed a project that required a fair amount of time working in the attic--where the temperatures would be well over 100 degrees.

A key reason for buying the Power Cat is that it has optional 6-in. dia. ducts that can be attached to either the intake or exhaust ports. On this job, I used the Power Cat mainly for drawing fresh, cooler air into the attic from the gable vent, but I also reversed it to exhaust dust and fumes. Moving the duct around in the attic was much easier than moving the unit. The 10-ft. long sections of duct feature quick-release attachment and can be extended with additional 10-ft. sections.

The Power Cat is well made and has an all-metal housing with a nice wood-faced handle for picking up this small 20-lb. unit. Its two-speed output--300 and 359 cubic feet per minute--is no cyclone, but it's enough for my needs.

Although the model tested has been discontinued, two other models are available.
