Editor's Review: Belt Sanders Get Better

review date: November 1, 2007

Ridgid's 3-in. by 21-in. belt sander features an inline motor and excellent sanding capability. Belt tracking is good, but the model tested was fussy about making adjustments. The lever that releases the front roller to allow for changing belts is smooth and easy to use. The speed control dial is well within reach, but it is too stiff to spin comfortably. The collar around the sander's trigger-locking button requires the user's nontrigger hand to depress it. The manufacturer warns against putting pressure directly on the front rollers, so this sander should not be used for concave scribing. No accessories are available for this model.

This sander includes a Velcro cord wrap and a soft-start function. It also has an adjustable three-position front handle, which improves comfort and tool control.
