Editor's Review: Testing the Best Portable Tablesaws

review date: July 1, 2005

The Ryobi BTS20 is our choice for best value among the portable tablesaws we tested. It was only one of two saws that could rip a 4x4 in half in a single pass. In addition to its power, the Ryobi BTS20 was the most portable. Its stand folds up easily, and its wheels are large enough to handle muddy yards. It rides up and down stairs with ease and is a breeze to load and unload from a truck because it is light and compact. Unlike most of the saws we tested, which use a lever with gravity-powered slide action for bevel adjustments, it uses wheels for both bevel and height adjustments. This method is slower, but dialing in precise angles is easier. On this model, however, these adjustments are inconvenient; they require the most revolutions and have small-diameter knobs. The side-support wing is tightened with knobs under the table, which is also inconvenient. Onboard storage is terrific.
