Editor's Review: Accurate, Easy-Reading Levels
review date: January 1, 2005
Stabila's new 196-series levels are slightly beefier than earlier versions, but they retain their familiar box-frame shape. Removable shock-absorbing end caps; wide, comfortable grips; and improved accuracy are main features. Stabila certifies the accuracy of the 196-series levels to within 0.029 degrees (about 1/16 in. in 4 ft.) in any direction. Previous versions, like most levels on the market, typically are less accurate when turned upside down.
When I'm working overhead-tiling a ceiling or header, for instance-I appreciate a bubble vial that's easy to read and just as accurate in any orientation (especially upside down). I particularly like the 59-in. size for when I'm working in a 5-ft. shower opening, but the 196 series is also available in 24-, 32-, 40- , 48-, and 72-in. sizes.
