At the request of the homeowners, I designed this contemporary Idaho cabin to embrace the stunning views of its locale. One of many prominent details designed to create a connection to the landscape is the window above the kitchen sink. The 5-ft.-wide by 5-1⁄2-ft.-tall window, which is actually a modified storefront door from Kawneer, sits atop a poured-in-place concrete countertop that cantilevers over the adjacent deck space. The resulting bar space has room for three people and helps to blur the delineation between indoor and outdoor spaces by connecting the activity in the kitchen and on the deck.
